It’s no longer just about environmental friendliness — it’s about the economy of the future. Ukraine has unique conditions for the development of this sector: fertile soils, favorable climate, and growing interest from European markets in organic products.

Despite this, the path to developing the organic sector remains challenging. It requires not only technologies but also trust, certification, financial instruments, and stable support policies. For a farmer who is just considering this direction, the main question is not whether it’s worth it, but how and when.

Current State of Organic Production in Ukraine

According to “Organic Standard”, as of 2025, there are over 500 certified producers of organic products in Ukraine, and the total area of certified land exceeds 400 thousand hectares. This is a significant indicator, considering the wartime conditions that have affected logistics, exports, and certification processes.

Ukrainian organic products are exported to more than 30 countries worldwide, including Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, and the USA. The main items remain cereals, oilseeds, legumes, honey, berries, vegetables, and processed products.

However, the share of the organic sector in the structure of all agricultural production does not yet exceed 1.5%. This indicates great potential, but also that for most farms, the transition remains difficult and risky.

Principles and Features of Organic Farming

Organic production is based on three key principles:

Rejection of chemical agents — no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or growth regulators.

Preservation of natural soil fertility — use of green manures, compost, crop rotation, biological preparations.

Ecological balance — the farm is viewed as a living system where crop production, animal husbandry, and soil interact naturally.

An organic farmer does not fight nature but works with it. This requires deep knowledge, constant observation, and planning for years ahead.

Growing without chemicals means greater risks — pests, weeds, yield fluctuations. But in return, the farmer gains stability in the long term: healthy soil, quality product, and higher added value.

Benefits for Farmers and the Environment

The transition to organic production opens up several areas of benefit.

Economic sustainability. Organic products have a higher market price — on average 20-40% more than conventional products.

Preservation of fertility. Soils that are not overloaded with chemicals restore microflora and become more resistant to drought.

Access to new markets. European buyers are ready to conclude long-term contracts with Ukrainian organic producers if they adhere to certification standards.

Development of the local economy. Organic farms create jobs, support small communities, and stimulate local production of fertilizers and biological preparations.

Main Obstacles to the Development of the Organic Sector

Despite the prospects, farmers face a number of serious barriers.

1. High cost of transition.
Certification of a farm for organic status takes up to three years and requires complete abandonment of chemical products. During this transition period, yields may decrease, and the products do not yet have “organic” status. This means temporary losses that not every farmer can afford.

2. Insufficient state support.
Despite the adoption of the organic production law, the system of compensation and subsidies operates on a limited basis. In EU countries, farmers receive subsidies for each hectare of organic land, while in Ukraine such mechanisms are still developing slowly.

3. Problems with the market.
Most Ukrainian farmers sell organic products through exporters, as domestic demand remains low for now. The development of domestic consumption is a matter of education, trust, and purchasing power.

4. Financial constraints.
Not all farms have the resources to invest in transition, certification, equipment, and training. This is why financial services that allow for the gradual purchase of necessary resources become important.

Financial Support for Organic Farmers

Modern organic production requires technologies — precision seeders, composting equipment, irrigation systems, soil analysis laboratories. All this requires significant investments, especially at the start.

The WEAGRO service offers agricultural installment plans that help farmers develop production without financial pressure. A farmer can purchase necessary equipment, fertilizers, or biological protection means with payment later — without collateral, initial payment, and paper bureaucracy.

This solution allows even small farms to start the path to organic production without freezing working capital. Thanks to this, the farmer can invest in soil preparation, seed purchase, and certification procedures gradually, without risking business stability.

Export Prospects and Global Opportunities

The demand for organic products in the world is constantly growing. The EU market has more than doubled in the last ten years, and Ukrainian farmers have every chance to establish themselves in it.

European importers are looking for stable suppliers of grains, legumes, and oilseeds grown without chemicals. Ukraine has an advantage in the form of fertile soils, as well as a favorable geographical location.

In the next five years, experts predict an increase in organic product exports by 30-40%, especially after the harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with European and simplification of logistics routes.

Path to Development: Education, Technology, Finance

The organic sector will develop faster if farmers have access to knowledge and finance. It is necessary to form a culture of long-term thinking — when a farmer views land not as a resource, but as a living organism that needs restoration.

Precision farming technologies, soil analytics, automated irrigation systems — all this becomes the basis for an organic approach. And financial services, such as WEAGRO, provide this transition with practical tools.

When innovation and sustainable development combine, the farmer gets not only profit but also a stable future for their farm and community.

Conclusion

Organic farming is not a trend, but a response to global challenges of food security, soil degradation, and climate change. Ukraine has all the conditions to become one of the leaders in this direction, but it requires coordinated work of the state, business, and farmers.

Financial instruments, education, and modern technologies should become the basis for the transition from short-term solutions to sustainable development. And this is where services that provide farmers with access to resources and finances without risks become an important link.

Develop your farm in harmony with nature.
Get equipment, biological products, or equipment for organic production with payment later — together with WEAGRO, an agricultural installment service for agribusiness.

Organic farming has ceased to be a niche direction.
