Before the end of the growing season, an agronomist needs to assess uniformity and density, development phase, roots, moisture, nutrition, weediness, diseases, and pests. Such monitoring continues the farm’s preparation for the autumn sowing season, as it shows the actual result of sowing in each field. The working sequence is as follows: winter crop emergence, measurement, comparison of plots, search for the cause of deviations, decision, and re-check. The specific product, rate, and timing of application are chosen after diagnosis, taking into account the crop, phase, and regulations.

When and how to conduct an autumn inspection of winter crops?

Plan four control moments: after mass emergence, during active vegetation, after a sharp cold snap, drought, or prolonged precipitation, and before the onset of dormancy. Dates depend on the region, sowing time, and weather.

The route is laid through representative and contrasting zones. Inspection from the road often hides local problems. During the walkthrough, separately check:

lowlands, elevations, and slopes;

equipment turnaround areas and tracks;

areas with compaction or a large amount of residue;

zones with different soil types;

strips with different plant color, height, or density;

places of possible water stagnation, washout, or drying out.

At each point, count the plants in the same way and take photos. In the field card, record the crop, variety or hybrid, predecessor, dates of sowing, emergence and inspection, phase, density, root condition, problem area, and planned action. The approach to sowing winter crops also affects interpretation: at different moisture and temperature levels, the pace of development varies.

Indicator No. 1. Uniformity of emergence and actual density

Density shows the number of plants per unit area. Uniformity characterizes their distribution across the field and the closeness of development phases. The average indicator may look acceptable, even though thickened strips, gaps, and clusters of late plants alternate in the field.

For counting, use a frame of a known area or a row segment at several points. Record each result, the average value, and the spread. Winter wheat density should be compared with the seeding rate, laboratory germination, variety, sowing date, and field conditions. For rapeseed, the benchmark is taken for a specific hybrid and technology.

The cause of gaps is sought in the problem zone. Moisture deficit, different seeding depths, crust, compaction, residues, pests, or seed quality can produce a similar picture. Additional guidelines regarding dates, seeding rates, and tillering are contained in the winter wheat cultivation technology.

Indicator No. 2. Development phase of wheat and rapeseed

The development of winter wheat in autumn is assessed by the number of leaves, tillering, formed shoots, the condition of the tillering node, and uniformity. At each point, inspect typical, weakest, and most developed plants to see the range of development.

Winter rapeseed in autumn is assessed by the number of true leaves, rosette, root collar diameter, growth point position, and taproot condition. Detailed benchmarks are contained in the rapeseed cultivation technology.

Lagging and excessive development have different risks. A late plant often has weaker roots, while overgrown rapeseed with a raised growth point requires a separate assessment of winter hardiness. For winter barley, record the phase, tillering, and uniformity according to varietal benchmarks.

Indicator No. 3. Root system and mechanical limitations

Plants are dug up with a clump of soil to preserve small roots, after which they are carefully cleaned. In cereals, inspect the tillering node, its placement depth, primary and secondary roots, branching, and damage. In winter rapeseed, check the taproot, root collar, lateral roots, curvature, and signs of infection.

Similar above-ground mass can hide different wintering potential. Therefore, record the length, shape, and branching of roots, tissue color, rotting, and mechanical damage in the card.

Indicator No. 4. Moisture and soil condition

During each walkthrough, check the moisture of the root-containing layer, root-to-soil contact, crust, compaction, waterlogging, water stagnation, erosion, and surface condition. Observations are tied to the route point.

Two fields sown on the same day with the same variety can have different winter crop conditions. On lighter soil, plants will feel moisture deficit faster; in a depression with heavy soil, they will suffer from prolonged waterlogging. A crust can complicate the appearance of late seedlings, and poor contact of the seed or root with the soil worsens the use of available moisture.

Comparing the problem and normal zones and digging a profile help establish the cause. After a change in weather, points are inspected again.

Indicators No. 5–7. Nutrition, weeds, and phytosanitary condition

When assessing nutrition, record the color, growth rate, localization of symptoms on young or old leaves, and distribution across the field. A sign may indicate a deficiency, root damage, waterlogging, cold, or soil reaction. For clarification, use the field history, application data, root inspection, soil or plant analysis.

For weeds, record the species, density, phase, and distribution. Competition is assessed along with the crop phase, weather, and the timing of possible intervention.

Inspect the leaves, the base of the plant, the rapeseed growth point, root collar, tillering node, roots, and soil. For diseases, determine the symptoms and the proportion of affected plants; for pests, the species, number, and distribution:

Identify the problem or take a sample for clarification.

Measure the distribution, intensity of infection, or population size.

Compare the result with the relevant threshold and development forecast.

Check the crop phase, weather, and registered regulations.

Choose an action, record it, and schedule a follow-up control.

Autumn care for winter crops is planned based on the results of field diagnostics and the economic feasibility of intervention.

Стати партнером

Agricultural Installments for Agribusiness

                    Learn more

How to assess the condition of winter crops in autumn before wintering?

Preparing winter crops for winter requires a cumulative assessment: acceptable density may be combined with weak roots, and a developed rapeseed rosette with damage to the growth point.

What we monitor

Winter wheat

Winter rapeseed

Signal for additional diagnostics

Density and distribution

Counting at several points, row uniformity

Counting at several points, distance between plants

Large gaps, thinning clusters, sharp spread of values

Development Phase

Leaves, tillering, shoots, uniformity

Leaves, rosette, growth point position

Significant lagging, heterogeneity, or excessive development

Root system

Tillering node, primary and secondary roots

Taproot, collar, lateral roots

Deformation, weak branching, darkening, damage

Moisture and soil

Condition of the root-containing layer

Condition of the root-containing layer

Drying out, crust, compaction, water stagnation

Weeds

Species, density, phase

Species, density, phase

High competition or rapid spread

Diseases

Symptoms, distribution, affected organs

Symptoms, distribution, affected organs

Increase in the proportion of affected plants

Pests

Species, number, clusters

Species, number, clusters

Reaching the relevant intervention threshold

The field number, crop, variety or hybrid, sowing and emergence dates, problem area, photo, action, and date of re-inspection are added to the table. In the spring, the records will help assess the consequences of wintering.

What to do if the field is not developing according to plan?

Deviations are first localized and confirmed by measurement:

Mark the problem area on the map and determine its size.

Compare it with a normally developed zone of the same field.

Check sowing and emergence dates, predecessor, and field history.

Verify the actual seeding rate, depth, and performed operations.

Count the plants at several control points.

Establish the phase and range of plant development.

Assess moisture, crust, compaction, and soil structure.

Dig up plants and inspect the root system.

Check nutrition, weeds, diseases, and pests.

If necessary, submit soil or plant samples for analysis.

Assess the cost of the measure and the expected result.

Record the decision in the technological map and schedule a re-inspection.

Weak growth can be related to moisture, nutrition, compaction, sowing time, or root damage. The economics of growing winter crops will help compare costs with the problem area and the expected result.

After field diagnostics, the farm can determine what additional costs are needed in the autumn or at the beginning of the spring season: for fertilizers, plant protection products, seeds, fuel, spare parts, and other resources. If such purchases create an additional burden on the seasonal budget, the farmer can use the financial solutions of the WEAGRO ecosystem. WEAGRO online services help pay bills and use agro-installment plans with deferred payments, WEAGROMARKET provides the opportunity to purchase necessary goods for the farm in installments, and WEAGROBANK expands access to financial products for agribusiness.
